The main museum houses permanent exhibits covering Native American history, European exploration and settlement, the region's role in the Civil War, the transportation evolution, and the area's industrial history. Next to the main building stands the 1897 Poe House, a meticulously restored late-Victorian residence that bears no relation to Edgar Allan Poe despite sharing the name. This historic house museum has been furnished in period style and knowledgeable tour guides provide fascinating insights into the social and cultural trends of late Victorian life.

On top of this, the Museum of Cape Fear is home to Arsenal Park, a four-and-a-half-acre area that houses the ruins of the Fayetteville Arsenal, which resourced the Confederate army before being destroyed by General William T. Sherman and his 60,000-man army in March of 1865. Walking through these historic grounds offers a tangible connection to the Civil War era.
