U.S. Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum
This museum wasestablishedin August 2000 by the Army to celebrate over 80 years of history of the airborne unit that fought for freedom, beginning with World War II. The museum offers exhibits on the Special Operations Forces from 1940 and into the future.
Exhibits begin with the Parachute Test Platoonestablishedin 1940. These are the brave men who "jumped into battle" in various campaigns throughout Europe. This was the proving ground for fivedivisionsthatspearheaded daring missions from Sicily to Normandy. They also fought in the Battle of Corregidor in the Philippines,participatingin both Europe and the Pacific.
The Eighth Army Ranger Company wasestablishedin 1951 during the Korean War. This included the historic 2nd Rangers, the onlyAfrican AmericanRanger unit in history. That same year, the 10th Special Forces Group wasestablishedat Fort Bragg, near Fayetteville. This is now the largest U.S. Army installation supporting airborne troops.
Special Operations personnel were present in Vietnam. This includes the 101st "Screaming Eagles," the 82nd, the 173rd "Sky Soldiers," and the Green Berets, who fought with courage in brutal jungles, often alongside indigenous allies. Special Forces were also in Afghanistan, and they continue to fight the global war against terrorism.
TheArmy Airborne and Special Operations Museum is owned andoperatedby the U.S. Army. The Airborne and Special Operations Foundation manages the store.
Fascinate-U Children's Museum
Imagination has no boundaries at Fayetteville's Fascinate-U Children's Museum. The museum offers hands-on interactive exhibits for children of all ages. Special programs are offered in science and technology throughout the year.
Exhibits include a miniature city with a post office, a farm, a courthouse, a grocery store, a construction zone, and a military command post. Young visitors learn about emergency medical services along with how and when to contact 911. They engage in making the call and role-playing to understand the importance of emergencies. They also learn about paramedics and ambulances. In addition, the exhibits include a fire station, an auto body shop, a police car, and a city airport.
The exhibits also have a doctor's office and pet clinic. Musical Pipes offers kids an opportunity to learn more about sound and musical principles. The Doggtown Diner gives them a restaurant experience. Electric City allows them to safely explore electricity.
The museum also has the Weekly Toddler Tuesday program with an art and science program designed for children ages 3 to 5. The Super Science Fun Fest is an annual event held in April. This is a free hands-on event that features a dozen or more science activities for students of all ages. It is offered at the Fascinate-U Museum with the North Carolina Science Festival held across the state.
The museum also works with local elementary schools to enhance the STEM programs of science, technology, engineering, and math. Special advanced workshops are also available for students in the fourth to eighth grades.

Museum of the Cape Fear
The Museum of the Cape Fear is part of the NC Dept. of Natural and Cultural Resources. It opened in June of 1988 and acquired and restored the 1897 Poe House. The Culbreth House, built around 1840, was moved on the site and also restored. The museum and the historical site cover almost seven acres in this unique display of local history. The region's rich and diverse 400 years of history come to life for visitors through exhibitions, living history programs, and demonstrations.
The coastal region known as Cape Fear was named for the treacherous shoals and rough waters that terrified sailors searching for the shoreline for the river as far back as the 17th century. Land-based pirates lured ships onto the sandbar known as "Frying Pan Shoals" with lantern lights, hoping to plunder their cargo.
The museum has a special exhibit on the Marquis de Lafayette, for whom the town is named. The exhibit explains the life story of this Frenchman and his role in the American Revolution.
Native Americans settled the region originally. European immigrants followed, some with slaves. Carolinians ratified the United States Constitution here. Steamboats plied the Cape Fear River, and the Civil War ravaged the nearby towns. This is an area with a rich North Carolina history waiting to be discovered by visitors and residents of the state.
